Stephen F. Austin State University statistics professor, Dr. Greg Miller, visited McMichael Middle School’s Algebra 1 students on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.
Miller’s goal was to build excitement and interest in mathematics and to show the students how math is used in ways that they never imagines.
Miller worked with 61 Algebra 1 students from 9:15 a.m. to noon. During this time, the students worked through 3 problems that invited them to think in a much deeper level than many of them had experienced.
The students left the session with a deeper appreciation of how mathematics is entwined in their everyday life.
“The purpose of today’s time with me and Dr. Miller was help students not to just learn how to solve for “X” but to also have them want to solve for “WHY”, said McMichael Middle School Principal Tim Mullican.
